POSC497 | Lab 10 ~ How Left-Leaning Each East Coast State is based on Democratic Votes (Lab 10 / Lab 9 Knit)
This Lab 10 / Lab 9 Knit project builds on my original East Coast choropleth map by turning it into an interactive Leaflet map. The purpose of the analysis is to examine how left-leaning each East Coast state was in the 2020 United States presidential election by calculating each state’s Democratic voter results. The map uses state-level Democratic and Republican vote totals from the 2020 election. I calculated each state’s total two-party vote count, Democratic vote share, and Republican vote share. Lab 9: The above choropleth map shows each state shaded by Democratic vote percentage. Darker blue states had a higher proportion of Democratic votes, while lighter blue states had a lower Democratic vote share. This allows the viewer to quickly compare regional differences across the East Coast. Lab 10: The interactive Leaflet version adds another layer of interpretation. Instead of only showing color differences, users can click on each state to view the state name, state abbreviation, Democratic vote percentage, Republican vote percentage, Democratic vote count, and Republican vote count. The map also highlights each state when the user clicks on it, making it easier to focus on individual states. One thing I would change about the interactive map is that the pop-up bubbles can sometimes block nearby states after a state is clicked. This makes it slightly difficult to move directly from one East Coast state to another. However, users can close the pop-up by clicking elsewhere on the map before selecting a new state.
