Species Distribution Model of Rhampholeon chapmanorum (Chapman’s Pygmy Chameleon) in the Nsanje District, Malawi
This document presents a fully reproducible, multi-algorithm species distribution model (SDM) for Rhampholeon chapmanorum (Chapman's Pygmy Chameleon), a Critically Endangered reptile endemic to the shrinking lowland rainforests of southern Malawi, with an estimated population decline of ~80% since the 1980s. The analysis was implemented in R using the tidysdm package (Leonardi et al., 2024) and covers the complete modelling workflow: GBIF occurrence data acquisition and coordinate cleaning, bias-corrected pseudo-absence and background sampling, WorldClim 2.1 bioclimatic variable extraction, collinearity screening, spatial block cross-validation (5-fold), ensemble modelling across four algorithms (GLM, Random Forest, Gradient Boosted Trees, MaxEnt), and present-day habitat suitability projection under the ACCESS-CM2 SSP2-4.5 (2041–2060) climate scenario. All methodological decisions are explained with reference to the primary SDM literature. Produced by Luther Mwalyambwile.
