Public education is a popular topic of media coverage because it affects nearly everyone at one point during their lives, either directly or indirectly. Within the overarching topic of education, there are multiple subcategories that receive attention from the media. For my analysis, I explore the effects of second-level agenda setting within two of those subcategories — funding and school violence — to determine how coverage volume of those attributes may affect public discussion.

Priming theory states that exposure to media content can influence later, unrelated attitudes and behavior, but usually not for long. For this experiment, I am measuring the effects of priming theory on three different groups of students who participated in three different types of academic activities prior to going outside for recess. I seek to measure the effects of exposure to an academic activity which includes violence and whether it has any effect on the students’ behavior at recess, immediately following the activity.

People who spend more time exposed to high-quality, central processing style information are more likely to favor the legalization of recreational use of marijuana in Tennessee and retain this attitude for longer.

In cultivation theory, heavy exposure to television or television-like programming leads to attitude stability. The theory was founded by George Gerbner in the late 1960s. At the core of the theory is that television is a powerful mass communication medium and that it shapes society’s culture and norms depending on the level of attention and viewership. Considering what the theory states, the number of hours a person spends watching commercially produced television stories should impact the perception of what the person thinks is “normal” within the culture. For this analysis, we will specifically examine the correlation between the level of television viewship and perception about what types of jobs most people have within society as a whole.

Viewers of national news outlets will assign a different priority to the topic of immigration depending on which news outlet they prefer and the frequency in which those outlets devote coverage to the topic of immigration.
